Mission of the organization
The Daughters of the Republic of Texas promotes the study of Texas history through maintenance of a research library on the grounds of the Alamo, and through preservation of documents and relics of early Texas kept at their headquarters and museum in Austin. They encourage preservation projects in local communities. They are custodians of the Alamo in San Antonio and the French Legation in Austin. Membership is open to women 16 years and older who can prove lineal descent from a man or woman who rendered loyal service to Texas prior to the consummation of the Annexation Agreement of the Republic of Texas with the United States of America on Feb. 19, 1846. The Tyler chapter also sponsors the Children of the Republic of Texas. Children from birth to age 21 are eligible if they meet the same lineal requirements as The Daughters of teh Republic of Texas. DRT supports a Texas History program at Andy Woods Elementary School, a Texas History Essay Contest in the private and public schools, and the preservation of the Governor's Mansion. DRT donates genealogical and historical books to the Tyler Public Library.
